Cuts- Continued from page 1 making payments for a police car, fire truck, and street gravel and oil supplies, Schatz said yesterday. Schatz told the council that Hamilton's projected income and expenses this year are being fairly well matched by records. About 76 percent of expected non--tax revenues in the general fund budget have been collected so far, while about 64 percent of general fund operating expenses and about 70 percent of general fund salary costs have been met this year, he said.

The city's fiscal year ends June 30. Schatz noted later-that the general fund income figure does not include tax income, which he said has come in consistently at about 95 percent of what it is projected to be each year. Schatz said he will know more about how much tax revenue is collected by June. Schatz told the council of a number of transfers between items in this year's budget. He noted, in particular, that he had had to draw funds from nine or 10 non-tax accounts to cover about $6,750 that the city paid to former City Police Chief jon-Eric Willette as part of the settlement of a recent dispute over Willette's past firing.

In other business at its Tuesday night meeting, Councilman Don Fullerton asked Schatz to speed repairs on two Hamilton streets, Pine and Madison. Pine is plagued with potholes, while three blocks of Madison have been torn up for a number of weeks during city graveling operations. Noting that Pine Street is part of the imbulance route to the hospital, Fullerton commented that because of the street's condition, patients are likely to "end up worse when they get there (to the hospital) than they are at first." Schatz told Fullerton that the city currently lacks the "equipment, the personnel or the dollars" to fix the streets as they should be fixed. Schatz said that Madison Streep like many in Hamilton, was built on a "muddy riverbed" without a proper gravel base to make the paving long--lasting. Madison Street, for example, needs do be dug out about 18 inches, and packed with about that much gravel at a cost of about $5,000 per block, according to an engineer's assessment.

With paving, the cost per block Increases to about $13,000, he said. Phyllis Ford Twogood atlliKsii Hamilton Date Max April 21 63 Min 26 the Bitter Root today.
