LEGALS KilDer disease discussed Com mlivloneri respond The three valley commissioners were interviewed this weekend by the Republic in an attempt to determine their positions on the policies, changes and future county road developments in the Involved West Fork area. Chairman of the board of commissioners Jim McKinley when questioned about policies and the other commissioners' statements on the mailboxes said, I have been busy with other county business and I know nothing about it. It is obvious you have more information on this problem than I do. He further stated, It isnt In my district.

Besides, the road supervisor (Unrue) knows what he Is to do and I presume he has taken care of the matter." Southern district commissioner Cumming stated he spent considerable time in the West Fork area Dec. 3 making on-the-site checks of the areas of most concern to the bus driver. He said he felt provisions for sanding Boulder Grade and Beavertail should be maintained. I also feel," he said, "that the district maintenance operator should be given the authority and responsibility for handling the snow and removal In a competent manner to assure safe and reasonable winter driving. Although he personally felt the county was spending too much money now In the West Fork area considering there are 1,600 miles of road to be maintained, Commissioner Galbraith said the new early morning hours and other policies would be continued throughout the winter.

He said that the county did have funds at this time to cover the current expenses and should they exceed that area budget, some monies could possibly be transferred from another department to pay for the maintenance. Montana problem Evered said it is hard to attach numbers to the alcoholism problem in Ravalli County, but the Governors office estimates there are 78,000 persons in Montana suffering from the disease of alcoholism. Each alcoholic can affect up to 10 other persons (such as family members, co-workers, employers, Evered noted, so its possible that up to half the population of Montana may be affected by alcoholism. He said the local Alcohol Action Service has about 10 people a day coming into our office. Not all, of course, are alcoholics. Some are family members who want to help the alcoholic in their family.

Oftentimes," he said, an alcoholic is reached through the efforts of his or her family. He noted that business in his office usually increases during the winter. Why Montana? Evered said no one has determined conclusively why Montana has more serious alcohol problems than the national average, but he personally feels the macho counselor. He also uses volunteers but only he and Pearcy do any counseling because they are the only trained counselors. The programs offices are located in the basement of the post office building, with an entrance at the east end of the building.

Office hours are 8-5, Monday-Friday. There is also a 24-hour-a-day answering service. The telephone number is 363-3060. In addition to providing coun- seling and referral service, the program visits at schools and churches and operates the DWI I school. The school, soon to be called the Montana Court School, provides education about alcohol and alcoholism to persons who have been convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI).

Modeled after a program originated in Phoenix, the school has been in operation four months with no one having to repeat the course, Evered said. He said the Phoenix program has had 3,500 participants with only 37 of them repeating the offense. Missoula has had a similar school for about 18 months, Evered added, with no repeaters so far. "We may not keep a person from drinking," he said, but we may keep them from drinking and driving. He said he feels the long-range solution to the problems of alcoholism is education for the alcoholic, for members of his family, for everyone.

image is largely to blame. You drink like a man even if it kills you, he said. He said persons who know they cant handle alcohol dirnk anyway to keep up the image. And, he added, persons who know an individual cant handle alcohol goad him into drinking anyway, perhaps ignorant that they are contributing to a potentially fatal disease. Montana also has a large Indian population and, for reasons no one has yet been able to identify with certainty, Indians in general have more problems with alcohol, Evered said.

At Deer Lodge State Prison, for instance, alcohol played a part In the crimes committed by 85 per cent of the white population. For Indians, the figure is 100 per cent. Evered noted that regulation of alcohol has tightened up over the years. He said he was 14 when prohibition was repealed. "To celebrate, I went into a bar and had about six beers and nobody ever questioned me." He said later, while still a teenager, he would sometimes fill in for his father in running a state liquor store.

During prohibition, he said, he made money as a boy by selling empty bottles to bootleggers for 60 cents a bottle. Local program Evered runs the local Alcohol Action Service with the help of Susie Gordon, secretary-receptionist, and Mary Pearcy, Bookie tells about Fireplaces Chestnuts roasting and the crackling sound of a fire in your own fireplace-just a warm thought to get you through the winter? No, building a fireplace can be a reality. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has a booklet that explains fireplace and chimney construction from A to Z. To get your copy of Fireplaces and Chimneys," send 40 cents to Consumer Information Center, Dept.

057E, Pueblo, Colorado 81009. It may come as a surprise, but fireplaces are not the most economical means of heating. Ordinarily, they are only about one-third as efficient as a good stove. But a well-designed one can give your home additional warmth, and use materials that might otherwise go to waste, like scrap lumber or old newspapers. Besides, they can be a beautiful and romantic addition to your home.

Whether youre building your own fireplace or having It done, there are building codes you must follow. Contact your local building inspector for exact specifications, and follow these guidelines for an efficient and safe fireplace and chimney: I. Every chimney must produce enough draft to supply fresh air to the fire and to expel smoke and gases produced by the fire. A chimney should extend at least three feet above a flat roof and at least two feet above a roof ridge or raised part of a roof near the chimney. Flue linings have to be fireproof, and this means able to withstand rapid changes in temperature.

The lining of the flue should be made of vitrified fire clay, and it should be at least five-eighths inches thick. 2. Never connect a range, stove, fireplace or other heating equipment to the flue for the central heating unit. Each piece of heating equipment must have its own flue. This is because two or more connections to the same flue can cause fires from sparks passing into one flue opening and out the other.

3. Wooden beams or joists should be at least two inches from a chimney wall. The space between can be filled with porous, non-metallic, noncombustible material. Do not use brick work, mortar, or concrete. The average home will not require chimney cleaning.

But before you even try out your new fireplace, it must pass the "smoke test. Build a paper, straw, wood, or tarpaper fire at the base of the flue. When the smoke rises in a dense column, tightly block the outlet at the top of the chimney with a wet blanket. If any escapes through the masonry chimney it means there are leaks. And leaks can cause fires.

Chimneys should be inspected each fall for defects. Look for loose or fallen bricks, cracked or broken flue linings, and excessive soot accumulation. DEAR POLLY I would like to tell Regina and other dog lovers of my sad experience with a rtng shaped bone used as a dogs toy. Such a bone got stuck around my dog's teeth, she had to be rushed to the vet's as she could not breathe for her tongue was also caught and then she had sedated for the bone to be sawed off. RQSALYN.

DEAR POtLY I find it very handy to keep a towel at the nght side of my sink. It is neater and Handler for draining dishes than a drain board. 1 use those plastic twist type ice cube trays so do not have to use a hammer or water to loosen the Ice cubes as I turn the tray upside down on that towel, twist sharply and the cubes come out clean and neat with no dripping water or mesa or fuss. When used this way these trays last indefinitely and also if they are filled with hot water they freeze faster. SHARA.
